Overweight & Obesity- What is the Cause?

An uneven balance between In and Out energy can cause overweight and obesity.Show more text

-Energy IN is the amount of energy (calories) you get from food and drinks.

-Energy OUT is the amount of energy your body uses for breathing, digesting and so on.

If you want to maintain a healthy weight your energy IN and OUT don’t have to balance exactly every day.  Overweight happen over time when you take IN more energy than you use.

Below, you will find some causes of overweighting:

An inactive Lifestyle

Many people spend hours in front of TVs and computers, doing leisure activities or work.  This type of inactivity can cause overweighting and obesity, because those people don’t burn the calories that they take in from food.

Environment:

Our environment encourages obesity.  The main reason is work schedules. Many people say that they don’t have any time for being physically active because of long work hours.

Another reason is oversized food portion. You can find oversized food portion everywhere, in restaurants, fast food places, gas station and even at home. An oversized food portion means too much energy IN and, in time, this can cause obesity.

Genes and Family History

Your genes can affect the amount of fat you store in your body and where on your body you carry the extra fat.  Children’s adopt the habits of their parents.  A child who has overweight parents who eat too many calories and are inactive will likely become overweight too.

Health condition and medicines

Some hormones problems can cause obesity such as underactive thyroid and polycystic ovarian syndrome.

In addition, medicines like corticosteroids and antidepressants can cause you to gain weight.

Emotional factors:

Many people eat more when they are bored, stressed or angry. Over time, overeating will lead to weight gain and obesity.

Pregnancy:

During pregnancy, women tend to gain weight to support their babies’ growth and developments.
